Website design and redesign for small businesses

Website design for a brand-new site, or a full redesign of one that has stopped pulling its weight. Every page is planned around your customers and ends in one clear next step.

Strategy, design, copy and build sit in one five-person team, so you talk directly to the people doing the work.

Websites we have worked on

How we design

New site or redesign, the work starts with your customers

A new business needs a website that explains what you do to people who have never heard of you. An older site often has the opposite problem: it grew page by page until nobody can find anything. We start both the same way.

First we list the services you sell, the questions customers ask before they get in touch, and the order they need those answers in. That list becomes the sitemap and page hierarchy, before anyone picks a font.

On a website redesign we also check what the current site already does well. Pages that bring in search traffic or enquiries are kept and improved, not thrown away with the old theme.

Designs use your real copy from the first draft, and our in-house writers can draft or tighten it with you. Approved pages come with a documented design system, so a page added next year still matches the homepage.

Do you need a new website or a full redesign?

A few weak pages can usually be fixed on their own. A full website redesign makes sense when the problems run through the whole site, or when the business has changed and the site has not kept up.

Launching something new? The same planning applies: decide what a visitor needs to see first, then design every page around it.

  • Your services or prices have changed, but the site still shows the old ones
  • Text and menus are hard to use on a phone
  • Every page looks like it came from a different site
  • Enquiries from the site have slowed and you cannot see why
  • Small text changes mean waiting on a developer

Only need one page for an ad campaign? See Landing Page Design. No logo or brand colors yet? Start with Branding and Visual Identity.

Our process

Six steps from first call to approved design

Your proposal lists each step, the number of review rounds and the price in USD.

  1. Discovery call

We talk through your business, your customers and, on a redesign, what is and is not working on the current site.

  2. Content and site review

We read your existing pages and notes, then list the questions customers ask before they buy.

  3. Sitemap and hierarchy

Pages, sections and their order are agreed in writing before any visual work begins.

  4. Wireframes with real copy

Grayscale layouts filled with your actual content, starting at phone width.

  5. Visual design and review

Type, color, imagery and components applied to each key template, with written feedback rounds as agreed.

  6. Handover or build

The approved design goes to development on a private staging copy, with redirects planned for any URLs that change.

How visitors read a page

From first visit to first enquiry

What a well-planned website design does for someone who has never heard of you.

Most people scan a page before they read it. The design decides which words they catch in those first seconds.

We set the hierarchy so that scan lands on what you do, who you do it for and how to reach you.

  1. They scan

A plain, large headline and a short subheading confirm they have found the right kind of business.

  2. They check

Readable text, strong contrast and clearly labeled sections lead them to the detail they came for.

  3. They compare

Photos of real work, credentials and pricing notes sit exactly where those questions come up.

  4. They act

One button style, used the same way on every page, makes getting in touch the obvious next step.

A clear page answers the next question before it is asked.

FAQs

Website design and redesign questions

Have a question about your own project? Send it to us.

How much does website design cost?

Every website design project is quoted individually in USD after a call. The price depends on how many page templates need designing, how much copy we write and whether you want design only or design and build. Scope, timeline and price are set out in writing before work starts.

How long does a website redesign take?

It depends on the number of pages and how ready your content is. Typical website development time with us is 1–4 weeks, and design is planned into that schedule. Your exact timeline is agreed in the written proposal before we begin.

Will a website redesign hurt my Google rankings?

Rankings usually drop when pages disappear or URLs change without redirects. Before launch we map every old URL to its new page and set up redirects, and we keep the pages that already bring in search traffic. SEO structure is part of the design from the start, not something added afterwards.

Do I need my copy written before the design starts?

No. We design with real copy, so a rough draft is enough to begin. Our in-house writers can turn it into headlines, page text and button labels, and how much writing is included is set in your proposal.

Do you build the website too, or only design it?

Both are options. You can take the approved designs and design system to your own developer, or have our team build the site on WordPress, WooCommerce or Shopify. WordPress builds use native blocks rather than a heavy page builder, and you get an editor walkthrough at handover.

Is responsive web design included?

Yes. Every layout is designed for phones first, then adjusted for tablets and desktops. You review the mobile and desktop versions of each key page before anything is built.

How many design revisions do I get?

The number of review rounds is set in your proposal before work begins. In each round you send written comments and we update the designs. Agreeing this upfront keeps the project on schedule and avoids open-ended back and forth.
